Nikola Tesla was a brilliant inventor who lived in the 19th and 20th centuries. He was an electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, and physicist.

He is perhaps most famous for his contributions to modern alternating current (AC). He was however a prolific inventor who created marvels of his day, and left a legacy that modern society feels strongly.

What follows is a brief timeline of highlights from Tesla's life.











1856 - Nikola Tesla was born in the village of Smiljan, in the Austrian Empire.

1873 - His father wanted him to be a priest, but agreed to let him pursue his passion: technology. Tesla dreams of electric sheep.

1875 - Enrolled at the High Technical School in Graz.

1878 - Works as an assistant engineer.

1881 - Invents the voice amplifier.

1884 - Immigrates to America, seeking more open minds to his new ideas.

1885 - Tesla's laboratory in New York burns down. He immediately rebuilds. Submits patent application for a regulator of dynamo-electric machines.

1891 - Tesla becomes an American citizen. He continues to file patents for more ideas and inventions.

1897 - Experiments with wireless transmission of electricity.

1898 - Files patents for the remote control of ships and vehicles.

1943 - Tesla dies in his hotel room.
